How to Succeed at Work

How to Succeed at Work

There were times when people would enter a job and have it for their entire working life. Then, the world was not changing as much as today; so, you could have a good idea of where you were heading in the workplace, and the path that your career would be likely to take.

That has all changed. People today change jobs frequently and change industries.

The old concept of doing an apprenticeship, completing a diploma or degree qualifications, and being assured of success, doesn’t apply anymore.

Sometimes we hear of people stumbling from one job to another, often without any great deal of foresight or planning. It’s equally common to stumble into a university or college course, and never even complete it.

What Makes a Career Satisfying and Successful?

Work in and study something you have a passion for.

Passion at work keeps you motivated, happier, and always learning.

Opportunities to gain experience will arise when you engage with an industry you are passionate about.

Motivated workers are more productive - leading to more opportunities.

Take the Blinkers off

How aware are you of what your career passion might be and what opportunities are possible?

We meet a lot of people who express a passion for the environment and ask about our courses but really don’t have a realistic understanding of the hundreds of different career pathways that relate to that passion.

Why is Avoiding Frequent Career Changes Better?

If people do fewer courses - only ones they are passionate about, there isn’t the need to retrain people as often. Education resources are not spread so thin, so the courses that are run can be better, deeper, and more motivating.

People stay on career paths longer, building more experience, creating an overall more skilled workforce.

Productivity increases and people achieve more at work.

People are more content in their workplace. The workplace is a happier place. People are more positive when they go home and interact with family and friends. The world becomes a happier place for all.

How Do We Achieve More Satisfying Careers?

Start by identifying and encouraging passion.

Expand your awareness of the possibilities that match that passion.

Ensure people get onto more suitable career paths that do not keep being abandoned.

Engage with, motivate and support new entrants to any industry.

The best way to build a career that fits with the best version of you, is:

1st Determine your passion.

2nd Learn more – acquire knowledge and skills that are valuable for work in jobs related to your passion. Part of that can be taking a course, but it needs to be a good course, and the right course for you.

3rd Get experience – if you can’t get a job at first, start volunteering. Paid work comes more easily to people with relevant experience, even unpaid experience.

4th Network – make friends and build relationships with people who have shared interests.
