PROBLEM BASED LEARNING (PBL)

Perhaps one of the more exciting projects over recent times has been the writing and inclusion of Problem Based Learning (PBL) Projects into some of our courses. PBL is explained in more detail on a new PBL section on our web site. http://www.acs.edu.au/pbl/pblhome.asp

PBL is better for career success

What Style of Study Works Best?

How do you choose what and where to study?

This is a big question, and one that should not be taken lightly!

-Study Options: Here are just a few-

1. Information Based Learning – A traditional approach where the core focus is on acquiring information.

2. Competency Based Training –Focus is on competencies (ie. The ability to do something tangible). Emphasis is often placed heavily on test ing the competency.; Sometimes assessing a competency becomes more important than learning it.

3. Student vs. Teacher Driven Learning –Traditional education involves a teacher determining and controlling what is studied and how it is studied. Student driven learning allows the student to determine these things.

4. Problem based Learning - See above

5. Blended Learning - combines different approaches

If you need more help with choosing your study options our career counselling website www.thecareersguide.com has helpful tips, advice and special articles.

RHS Courses

After 111 years, the RHS General Certificate in Horticulture is changing name in order to satisfy accreditation through the Qualifications Curriculum Authority in the U.K.

The new course will be called the RHS (level 2) Certificate in Horticulture. The current General Certificate will be phased out with the final exams being held for that course in March 2006. Any students currently pursuing the RHS General with ACS will have the option of sitting exams and completing the “General Certificate” before that date; or transferring to the new course.

Based upon our research and experience, staff at ACS believe Problem Based Learning prepares most people better for career success than any of the other methods outlined.
