How a Writer Can Get Inspiration
Writer’s Block can occur when a writer loses their inspiration, cannot think how the story will progress and so on. Some writers only ever write one book. They have a brilliant idea, write that one book and that’s it. For example, the following authors only wrote one (famous) book –
Harper Lee - To Kill a Mocking Bird
Boris Pasternak – Dr Zhivago
Margaret Mitchell – Gone with the Wind
Emily Bronte – Wuthering Heights
Hopefully as a writer you will have a range of ideas for different stories and books. So a good writer will always be looking for inspiration. We have touched on this before, but a writer should be aware. A writer should be an observer – of nature, of people, of buildings, of events, of the news, of reactions. All of these can be the starting point of a story. This is where we recommend the use of a notebook to get content for their stories. As we said, a simple sentence or view can inspire a writer to create a new story or give them ideas to improve a story they are already planning or writing. So always be open for ideas. Always keep an eye out for new ideas, new thoughts.
We can get new ideas from –
- Social media
- Friends and family
- People we don’t like
- Other writers
There are many resources available to writers. For example –
Networking – Writers may network with other writers face to face or online. Face to face they may meet at creative writing groups, writing forums, writing courses and so on. Online, they may use online forums, websites that contain tips and ideas. It may also be possible to join writers’ groups, associations and professional bodies – online and face to face.
Conferences and Seminars – Another way to talk and meet with other writers is by attending conferences and seminars. This can be about writing, but it can also be about your specialist subject. For example, if you write about information technology, you might attend seminars and conferences as a way to keep up to date with current research and invention.
Social Media – Social media can be a good way to link to other writers and to potential readers.
