DESEXING PETS


Desexing helps lower aggression & stopping breeding, reducing the number of unwanted dogs and cats, especially if they go wild. The best time for female dogs is after they have been on heat or before and usually when between 5- 7 months old. Male dogs any time after 6 months old.

AVANTAGES OF DESEXING DOGS
  • Reduces tendencies to wander.
  • Reduces aggression
  • Reduces risk of testicular cancer
  • Reduces risk of prostate gland problems
  • Reduces risk of perinel hernia and perianal adenomes.
DISADVANTAGES
Some owners perceive the animal to loose character and spirit. This is not proven and generally regarded as a fallacy.

ADVANTAGES FOR FEMALE DOGS AND CATS
  • Prevents unwanted litters
  • Eliminates bloody discharge due to being in season.
  • Reduces risk of mammary cancer
  • Reduces risk of infection of the uterus.
  • Generally the animal settles down.
DISADVANTAGES
Animal is unable to produce a litter if the owner wanted to breed.

ADVANTAGES FOR MALE CATS
  • Reduces spraying of urine
  • Reduces risk of spreading feline aides
  • Reduces risk of spreading feline leukemia
  • Council registration is lower for desexed dogs and cats.

DISADVANTAGES
No significant disadvantages

 

PROCEDURE FOR FEMALE CATS AND DOGS
  • Premed anaesthetic
  • Full anaesthetic before surgery commences
  • 2 ovaries are removed, womb, cervix and tubes.
  • After surgery exercise is restricted and no swimming or baths and generally keep the animal quiet.
  • 10 - 14 days the sutures are removed.

PROCEDURE FOR MALE CATS AND DOGS
  • Premed anaesthetic
  • Full anaesthetic.
  • Open the scrotum sack
  • Remove the testicles
  • Suture the blood vessels and sacks.
  • After surgery exercise is restricted, no swimming or baths.
  • 10 –14 days return to remove the sutures.
  • In Australia, the typical cost for desexing cats can be between $60 and $120; and for dogs, between $100 and $200 (larger dogs could cost even more)
