CAREERS UPDATE from our Principal

Careers are a big issue for everyone these days, whether you are just preparing to enter the workforce for the first time, or a mature aged adult seeking a lifestyle change.

Career decisions used to be relatively simple. There were certain industry options, and it was a matter of choosing the right option, then preparing for it.

There are two ways to approach this very fluid and rapidly changing workplace:

  • Some people see it as confusing, making career and education choices in the context of yesterday's world rather than tomorrows; or simply find decisions hard to make.
  • Others embrace the uncertain future as exciting, and work hard to develop skills that will allow them to identify and grasp opportunities, adapting to the future as it unfolds.

Will this course get me a Job?

This is a common question, and everyone wants a simple answer, BUT THE ANSWER IS NOT SIMPLE. Consider:

  • The world's changing fast. Many informed experts believe most of the jobs that will be available in ten years time may not have even been thought of yet
  • Apart from jobs restricted by law (eg. doctors, lawyers), qualifications are often not as critical to getting a job as many people think –though the knowledge you obtain through undertaking a good course may still be critical.
  • Employers consider many things when selecting employees, not only the level of qualification, but also the mix of subjects you studied, your personality and broad experience and how these things fit into their needs at a particular point in time.
  • Larger organisations may look for very different things in an employee to smaller ones.

How to Get Work

Getting a job is easier with some relevant study behind you;

BUT education is only PART OF THE EQUATION.

ACS is different to other colleges.

We design our courses to develop other things that are necessary for getting work and advancing careers. Most ACS courses develop:

•  a foundation knowledge of the subject

•  industry awareness

•  networking with industry

•  relevant communication skills

•  capacity to apply knowledge to real life

Join a Professional Body

Joining a professional Association or Institute can be a very good way to further your career. Membership is viewed as a plus by employers, but more than that, it allows you to network with colleagues in your industry, and that can play a big part in furthering your career. We encourage all ACS students to join at least one professional body; and tutors are happy to help advise on which is best for you.
