The Australian Counselling Association - How can they help you?
One benefit of studying counselling or psychology through ACS is that you can become a member of Australia's largest counselling body, the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). The ACA has members all across Australia and in many other countries, and has established relationships with counselling associations in Britain, Canada, Ireland, Kenya and Malaysia.
The ACA is an association of counsellors and psychotherapists. As the "voice of counsellors", it lobbies government for formal recognition of counselling as an allied health service which, if successful, will result in health rebates for counsellors. It also provides information for members and the public, promotes industry standards, and creates employment opportunities for counsellors by lobbying local businesses and referrals.
The ACA has a current national register of counsellors that it uses to refer enquiries from the public to its members. It is also working on a similar register of overseas members, to provide overseas referrals. If you are an overseas counselling student, be sure to register with the ACA on graduation. The ACA also approves counselling courses that meet its strict requirements. Our Psychology and Counselling course is approved by the ACA, and on successful completion of this course, you will be a qualified counsellor. You can then open a private counselling practice (at least in Australia), under supervision of a professional supervisor. (The ACA can refer you to one). However, it is recommended that new counsellors attain approximately six months of counselling practice, perhaps as volunteers, before going into private practice.
Earlier this year, the ACA and the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists co-hosted an International Research Conference. The president of Warnborough University in the U.K., Brendan Tempest-Mogg, represented the ACA at the conference. In July-August of this year, the ACA will hold "Build a Private Practice" workshops across Australia.
If you are taking a counselling or psychology course, join the ACA and receive their monthly newsletter, so packed with interesting and relevant information. To join, or to find out more about ACA workshops, contact the association via E mail: aca@theaca.net.au
